County sites: 9.30am to 5pm every day, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The exception is Waterswallows near Buxton, which opens 8.30am to 6pm. The council asks people not to queue before opening and to avoid weekends between 10am and 4pm if they can. Sites can also close briefly during the day while skips are compacted.
Raynesway (Derby): different hours and a booking system. It opens 8am to 6pm on Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays, but only 12 noon to 6pm Tuesday to Friday. You must book Monday to Saturday, while Sundays are walk-in. See our Raynesway guide.
Before you go: register your vehicle
The county tips are for Derbyshire residents only, and number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras check vehicles on the way in. If your registration details don't match, you may not get in.
- Cars and pick-ups: register online through your Derbyshire County Council account. You can register up to 2, and each registration lasts 7 years. Camper vans are covered by the normal registration. If you registered before 9 November 2024, you need to register again.
- Vans (up to 3.5 tonnes): you need a temporary permit for every visit. It's valid for the day you get it and the next day, so only apply once you know when you're going. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes aren't allowed at all.
- Trailers: allowed with a load area up to 2 metres long (not counting the tow bar). Horse boxes aren't allowed.
- Proof of address: bring a driving licence or utility bill, as you may be asked for it.
What the county tips won't take
- Trade or business waste (apart from a paid trial at Ashbourne and Stonegravels)
- Waste a builder or tradesperson has left with you
- Sheds, playhouses, fencing, decking and greenhouses being taken down or replaced
- Fitted kitchen units, fitted wardrobes and whole bathroom suites (one single bathroom item is fine)
- Tree trunks, stumps and branches thicker than 150mm
- Japanese knotweed and other invasive plants
- Artificial grass, gas cylinders like Calor Gas, soiled pet bedding and clinical waste
Limits on DIY waste
| Material | Limit |
|---|---|
| Rubble, concrete, soil and turf | About 50kg (2 × 25kg sacks) per visit per week |
| Plasterboard | About 50kg per visit per week, no whole sheets |
| Fridges and freezers | Currently one per household |
| Window frames or doors | 2 from a DIY project |
| Asbestos | Up to 2 sheets, £6 each, card only, wrapped and sealed |
| Tyres | Up to 4 from a home vehicle, £4 each |
| Carpet | One room |
| Insulation | 1 black bag |
The rule that catches people out: paid tip runs
If you pay someone to take your waste away, it becomes their trade waste the moment they take it, and the council tips won't accept it. That's why a "man with a van" who offers to "drop it at the tip" is a red flag. You have a legal duty of care to check that whoever takes your waste is a licensed waste carrier. You can check on the Environment Agency register.
Small differences between sites
- Waterswallows (Buxton): longer hours, but no carton banks, plastic bag and film recycling, vape recycling or free paint. High Peak residents can recycle cartons in their kerbside bins.
- Every other county site: gives away free paint, subject to stock. Ask a recycling advisor.
- Ashbourne and Stonegravels: trialling a paid trade waste scheme, only between 8.30am and 9.30am and between 5pm and 6pm.
When the tip isn't the answer
The tips are free and great for a boot of sorted recycling. They're not much help for a full house clearance, a renovation, a pile of fence panels or a second fridge. That's when a licensed collection is simpler: one visit, all the lifting done for you, and a receipt showing your waste was dealt with legally.
