Sizes

Which skip size do I need?

SkipHolds roughlyGood for
Mini (2–3 yard)25–35 bin bagsGarden tidy, small bathroom
Midi (4–5 yard)40–55 bin bagsKitchen refit, garage clear-out
Builders' (6–8 yard)60–80 bin bagsHouse renovation, heavy rubble

If you're not sure, go one size up. A skip that's overfilled won't be collected until it's levelled off.

Do I need a permit?

If the skip fits on your own drive or land, you don't. If it has to go on the road or pavement, you need a permit from the council that looks after the road: Derby City Council inside the city, or Derbyshire County Council elsewhere in the county. In practice, your skip company applies for it and adds the cost to your quote, so ask whether it's included when you compare.

What can't go in a skip?

Most companies won't take fridges, freezers, TVs, tyres, batteries, gas bottles, paint, asbestos or plasterboard mixed with other waste. Plasterboard has to be kept separate, so tell the company if you have some. If you have lots of these items, a man and van may be easier.

Skip or man and van?

A skip is best when waste builds up over days, like during a renovation. For a one-off clear-out, a man and van is often cheaper, takes the waste the same day, and doesn't need a permit.

Check the licence before anyone takes your waste

By law, you have to make sure your waste goes to someone licensed to carry it. This is called your duty of care. If an unlicensed operator dumps it and it's traced back to you, you can be fined. A price that looks far too cheap is the usual warning sign. Every company we put you in touch with is registered as a waste carrier, and you can check any company on the Environment Agency public register. Always ask for a waste transfer note or receipt showing who took the waste.
