Renovating a kitchen, ripping out a bathroom or knocking through a wall? Compare quotes from licensed companies who collect rubble, bricks, tiles, plasterboard and soil from homes and building sites across Derby and Derbyshire.
Derbyshire County Council's tips only take small amounts of DIY waste. Rubble, soil and turf are limited to about 50kg (two 25kg sacks) per visit per week. Plasterboard has the same 50kg limit, and whole sheets aren't accepted. Kitchen units, fitted wardrobes and whole bathroom suites aren't accepted at all. If a builder leaves their waste with you, the tips won't take that either, so always ask your builder to include waste removal in their quote.
That leaves two options: a skip or a man-and-van collection. A collection is often cheaper for a one-off job, because there's no permit and no waiting around.
Plasterboard can't be mixed in with general waste because of the gypsum it contains. Keep it in its own pile or bags and tell the company you have some.
Rubble, soil and concrete are much heavier than household rubbish, so a van fills up by weight long before it's full by space. Expect to pay more for a load of rubble than for the same amount of furniture, and say roughly how much you have when asking for quotes.
If you think something might contain asbestos, such as old artex, floor tiles or garage roof sheets in older homes, don't break it up. It needs a specialist, not a normal waste collection.
By law, you have to make sure your waste goes to someone licensed to carry it. This is called your duty of care. If an unlicensed operator dumps it and it's traced back to you, you can be fined. A price that looks far too cheap is the usual warning sign. Every company we put you in touch with is registered as a waste carrier, and you can check any company on the Environment Agency public register. Always ask for a waste transfer note or receipt showing who took the waste.
Only small amounts. Derbyshire County Council's tips take up to about 50kg of rubble, soil or turf per visit per week from your own DIY. Anything more, or waste left by a builder, needs a licensed collection or a skip.
No. Plasterboard must be kept separate from other waste. Tell your collector so they can bring the right bags.
It's heavy, and waste sites charge by weight. A van reaches its weight limit with rubble long before it's full.
Standard collections can't. Asbestos needs a specialist licensed contractor.
