Sofa & Mattress Disposal in Derby & Derbyshire
Sofas and mattresses are the most common bulky items people need rid of, and they're also two of the trickiest. They're big, they won't fit in most cars, and old upholstered furniture now has special disposal rules. Here are your options.
Why sofas cost more to get rid of
Many sofas, armchairs and foam mattresses contain chemicals called persistent organic pollutants (POPs), mostly from old fire retardants. Since a change in the rules in January 2023, councils such as Amber Valley collect these items separately. In England, waste upholstered seating that may contain POPs has to be destroyed, usually by burning at high temperature, rather than buried in landfill. That's why some collectors and waste sites charge more for sofas, and why they shouldn't be thrown in a general skip.
Mattresses are bulky and hard to recycle, so they often carry a small extra charge too.

1. Sell or donate it
If it's in good condition and has its fire safety label, a furniture charity or reuse project may take it. Derbyshire County Council lists furniture reuse projects on its website, and Derby's Reuse Raynesway shop sells donated furniture.
2. Take it to the tip
All Derbyshire tips accept furniture and mattresses from residents, but you'll need a vehicle big enough, and at Derbyshire County Council sites, a registered car or a van permit.
3. Council bulky collection
Your local council will collect from the kerb for a fee. Erewash, for example, collects foam seating like sofas and armchairs separately, at £26 for up to three. See our council prices guide.
4. Private collection
A licensed company collects from inside your home, often the same day. Single items usually start from around £60.
Don't leave it outside
Leaving a sofa or mattress on the street, even with a "free to take" sign, can count as fly-tipping. And if you pay someone who dumps it, you can be fined too. Always check they're a licensed waste carrier.
